Characteristics
The southern catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides), or Indian bean tree, is a medium deciduous tree with a broad crown and large heart-shaped leaves, ideal for shade. In early summer it bears showy panicles of frilly white bell flowers, followed by long, thin bean-like pods (‘cigars’). It wants full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. It grows fast to 10-18 metres.
