Classification and category

The White Stork belongs to the order Ciconiiformes (storks — formerly classified as "Wading birds"), family Ciconiidae, genus Ciconia. The family Ciconiidae comprises 19 species distributed across all continents except Antarctica. Ciconia ciconia was scientifically described by Linnaeus in 1758. It is closely related to:

Habitat and distribution

The White Stork prefers open habitats: wet grasslands, marshes, alluvial meadows, rice paddies, savannas, agricultural land with ponds and ditches. Unique feature among large birds: strong commensalism with man. Storks often nest on the roofs of houses, on chimneys, on bell towers, on power line pylons in rural villages. This anthropophilic association has existed for at least 2000 years — the Romans already noted storks on houses. Today, in some regions (Alsace, southern Spain, Poland), over 80% of nests are on human structures: roofs, electric poles, artificial platforms installed for them. The nests are monumental: piles of branches and sticks, up to 2 m in diameter and 3 m in height, weight 250-500 kg!
