The European Wild Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is a species of lagomorph (NOT rodent in strict sense!) of the family Leporidae. It is the progenitor of all ~305 domestic rabbit breeds in the world. Native to the Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal) and the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria), it is now distributed in 5 continents as an introduced species. Main features:

Lagomorphs are an ancient order (~50 Mya) separated from Rodentia by at least 60 Mya: share continuously growing incisors (gnawing), but differ by: (1) 4 upper incisors (not 2 like rodents) — 2 large plus 2 small "peg teeth" behind; (2) exclusively herbivorous diet; (3) cecotrophy (re-eating of own special faeces).

The genus Oryctolagus is monotypic: contains only O. cuniculus. Two recognised subspecies: O. c. cuniculus (Europe) and O. c. algirus (Iberia/Maghreb, possibly separate species).

Etymology: "Oryctolagus" from Greek "orýktēs" (digger) + "lagós" (hare) — reference to digging habit. "Cuniculus" from Latin "tunnel". Described by Linnaeus 1758.

Sì! Si chiama SUPERFETAZIONE. Una femmina di Coniglio Europeo può rimanere incinta di una seconda nidiata pochi giorni PRIMA di partorire la prima. La gestazione è di 28-32 giorni, e la femmina può accoppiarsi di nuovo nelle ultime 1-2 settimane di gravidanza. Risultato: 5-7 nidiate/anno con cuccioli che si susseguono continuamente. Come è arrivato il coniglio in Australia?
Nel 1859, Thomas Austin (allevatore inglese-australiano di Geelong, Victoria) importò 24 conigli europei selvatici dall'Inghilterra. È vero che il coniglio è stato addomesticato per ragioni religiose?
Sì, almeno in parte! Nel Medioevo cattolico, durante il Quaresima (40 giorni di astinenza dalla carne), i monaci francesi cercavano fonti di proteine alternative. Una controversa interpretazione papale (probabilmente Papa Gregorio Magno o successori, ~600 d.C.) classificò i LAURICES — cuccioli di coniglio neonati estratti dall'utero della madre prima del parto — come 'pesce' (per via dell'origine 'acquosa' nell'utero). Quindi i laurices erano permessi nel Quaresima! Questo creò una domanda enorme nei monasteri francesi, che iniziarono ad allevare coniglie gravide in cattività per fornire laurices. Da qui partì la DOMESTICAZIONE del coniglio (~600 d.C.). Selezione formale di razze iniziò XVII secolo. Oggi: 305+ razze domestiche riconosciute. NB: i laurices non vengono più consumati per ragioni etiche, ma furono il 'kickstart' della razza domestica.
