Temperament

Diet

Classification and category

Order Carnivora, family Felidae, genus Lynx — that of the four lynxes: the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus), the bobcat (Lynx rufus) and the Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis). The species it is most confused with is the bobcat, with which it shares part of its North American range; how to tell them apart: the Canada lynx has much larger, furrier feet ("snowshoes"), longer legs and more marked ear tufts; it has a fully black tail tip all around, whereas the bobcat's is black only on top (white below); its coat is greyer and more uniform, less spotted than the bobcat's more fulvous one; and it is a snow-and-snowshoe-hare specialist, while the bobcat is far more generalist and adaptable. Where the two ranges meet, in southern Canada, Canada lynx and bobcat can even hybridize ("blynx"). Etymology: "Lynx" is from Greek, linked to keen sight; "canadensis" denotes Canada, the heart of its range. Parameters: Body 80-105 cm. Tail 5-12 cm (short, black-tipped). Shoulder height ~48-56 cm. Habitat and distribution

The Canada Lynx is tied to North America's boreal forests (taiga): much of Canada and Alaska, and south into the northern USA (Rocky Mountains, Great Lakes region, New England). Preferred habitats — cold, snowy forests: boreal coniferous forest (taiga, its prime habitat, where the snowshoe hare abounds); mixed forests and areas with dense undergrowth (offering cover for hunting and dens); and areas with deep, persistent snow (where its big paws give a decisive advantage). Physical features

The Canada Lynx has the classic look of a "snow lynx": a compact body, long legs and outsized feet. Coat: thick and soft, silvery-grey in winter (browner-fulvous in summer), with faint spotting; long, insulating fur suited to the rigours of the taiga. The distinguishing traits: enormous furred feet (true "snowshoes" that increase the bearing surface and allow walking on snow without sinking); long black ear tufts, more developed than in the other American lynxes; a broad facial ruff (a "collar" of fur); a very short tail with a fully black tip; and long hind legs, giving an "uphill" gait. Che differenza c'è tra la Lince Canadese e la Lince Rossa (bobcat)?
Sono parenti strettissime e condividono parte del Nord America, ma sono adattate a mondi diversi. La Lince Canadese è la specialista delle nevi: ha piedi enormi e pelosi ('racchette da neve'), zampe lunghe, ciuffi auricolari più sviluppati, mantello più grigio e uniforme, e dipende quasi totalmente dalla lepre delle nevi e dalla foresta boreale. La Lince Rossa è più piccola e generalista: piedi più piccoli, mantello più fulvo e macchiato, dieta varia, capace di vivere quasi ovunque dai deserti alle periferie. Il dettaglio più pratico è la coda: nella Lince Canadese la punta è interamente nera tutt'intorno, mentre nella Lince Rossa è nera solo sopra (bianca sotto). Che cos'è il ciclo lince-lepre?
È uno degli esempi più famosi di tutta l'ecologia, un classico modello di dinamica predatore-preda. La Lince Canadese dipende in modo quasi assoluto da un'unica preda, la lepre delle nevi. Le sue zampe enormi e ricoperte di pelo folto sono un adattamento straordinario alla vita nella neve: funzionano esattamente come delle racchette da neve. Allargando la superficie di appoggio, distribuiscono il peso dell'animale e gli impediscono di sprofondare nella neve farinosa, permettendogli di muoversi e cacciare con agilità in un ambiente in cui i predatori più pesanti e dalle zampe piccole faticano enormemente. Non è un caso che la sua preda principale, la lepre delle nevi, abbia a sua volta grandi piedi 'racchettati': è una sorta di 'corsa agli armamenti' sulla neve tra cacciatore e preda.
La Lince Canadese è in pericolo?
A livello globale è classificata dalla IUCN come 'Least Concern' (rischio minimo), grazie alle vaste e robuste popolazioni che vivono in Canada e in Alaska, dove la foresta boreale è ancora estesa. La situazione è più delicata per le popolazioni più meridionali, negli Stati Uniti contigui (Montagne Rocciose, Grandi Laghi, New England), dove la specie è più rara e protetta dalla legge come 'minacciata' (Threatened). Le minacce principali sono la perdita e la frammentazione della foresta boreale e, soprattutto, il cambiamento climatico: la riduzione dell'innevamento diminuisce il vantaggio delle sue 'racchette da neve' e permette alla più adattabile Lince Rossa di spingersi più a nord, entrando in competizione con lei.
